A couple of weeks a go, I was sent the KISS InstaWave automatic tangle-free curler to try out and review through BrandBacker.
I was really excited to try out this curling iron, as although I naturally curly hair, I like to use a curling iron to get more defined, neater curls.
The concept of this curling iron is that it has a curl dial, which can go both left and right. There are a set of spokes around the base of the barrel that capture the hair and when you press the dial, it begins to wrap the hair around the curling iron barrel. This means that you do not need to use both hands to hold onto the curling iron and wrap the hair around the barrel and hold it in place.
The KISS InstaWave has two heat settings, a low and high, with a maximum temperature of 420 degrees Fahrenheit (it definitely gets very hot!). They have added a safety feature to make sure the curling iron shuts off after 90 minutes of use. This is a fairly standard feature that comes with most flat irons and curling irons nowadays, but it is nice to know this product also has this feature.
My lovely friend and YouTuber/blogger, Eleana Claire, kindly agreed to be my model to try out this product so that I could take some photos to show each step of using this curling iron and the overall look we created. Check out Eleana's YouTube channel here, and subscribe to her because she's an awesome lady!
I'll now give you a quick five step guide to use the curling iron with some more photos to see the curling iron in action and Eleana's final look.
Step 1/ Turn on the curling iron. It will show a red light near to the curl dial, which will turn blue when the iron reaches the maximum temperature for each setting.
Step 2/ Section the hair into layers, starting with the bottom layer of hair. Eleana has the perfect hair for this curling iron as her hair is naturally straight and smooth. She does have thick hair so we curled it in three layers to make sure we weren't putting too much hair in each section that we curled.
Step 3/ Take a small section of the hair, around an inch wide and place around the spokes at the base of the barrel. Press the curl dial to either go left or right and the spokes will begin to collect the piece of hair and wrap it around the barrel. Hold the hair in place around the barrel for around 10 seconds for looser curls, or slightly longer if you want tighter curls. Remember that this gets very hot so do not hold the hair around the barrel too long.
Step 4/ Release the hair from the barrel by gently pulling the curling iron down vertically. The hair will unravel from the barrel. Continue curling all of the first layer of hair. A great tip from InstaWave was to curl certain sections of the hair in different directions, to ensure that the hair looks more natural.

Step 5/ Section off the next layer of hair and follow steps 3 and 4 on this layer. Repeat these steps on all layers of hair so that the whole head is curled.

The finished look! We only left each section of Eleana's hair around the barrel for around ten seconds as she likes looser curls and we didn't want to damage her hair with too much heat. This gave a pretty loose curl but a nice overall. I think Eleana's hair looked great when she actually brushed through the curls to create a loose wave style! See below.
I think this curling iron created a really beautiful look on Eleana but I have to admit that I wouldn't buy it for myself. I have pretty frizzy and at times tangled hair, which I do not think would work very well with the automatic curling portion of this curling iron.
The main issue Eleana and I faced while trying out this iron was that when we put a section of the hair in the spokes and pressed the curl dial, it did begin to take the hair up around the barrel but it would not get all of the section of hair and was not very tight against the barrel. It's definitely much easier to get a tighter, neater curl with a regular curling iron, wherein you would wrap the hair up the whole barrel and hold it tight against the barrel.
One final issue I had with this iron was that if I did select a slightly larger section of Eleana's hair, it could begin to get a little caught and tangled up. It wasn't anything too bad but it would mean having to be careful about how much hair to use in each section.
If you would like to find out more about the product, you can find it online at KissInstaWave.com
The KISS InstaWave is available in Target, Ulta & Amazon.com and retails at $59.99, which is definitely not cheap for a curling iron but not as expensive as some top of the range styling tools.
[I was sponsored for this review by KISS InstaWave in partnership with BrandBacker and received the curling iron for free.]
